POSTNATAL CARE

Definition:

Postnatal care provides support to the mother and family following birth. Historically the grandmother would help during the first 40 days. Nowadays this period is not as known and grandmothers are not as available. Having an experienced and impartial postnatal doula during this period is very securing for new parents. We think new mothers need and deserve to be looked after and pampered.

There for our agency provides support during this important period. The goal is to secure, encourage and help the new mother and father to adapt slowly to their new parental life. The postnatal care is based on responding to the newborn needs as well as other house hold duties.

Studies have shown that post natal care can decrease postpartum depression and prevent various forms of psychological stress after childbirth due to hormonal change or exhaustion in the first few weeks.

Postnatal doula care includes:

• Providing moments of rest for the mom
• Providing newborn care
• Light housekeeping and errands
• Cooking meals for the family
• Landry and general tidy-up
• Support breastfeeding or feedings
• Gives information on useful community references
• Gives encouragements and answers to parents
• Promotes interaction and bonding between parents and their infant
• Companionship and nonjudgmental support to increase parental confidence

Information on the service:

• Home visits off four hours and more at a time
• Short or medium term
• Confidentiality assured
• Receipts
• Service offered in Quebec
• Teaching baby massage if desired (extra charge)
